Cape is a private cell phone service designed for people doing high-consequence work, like journalists, activists, rights advocates, and anyone facing surveillance, censorship, or targeting.
Many privacy tools like encrypted chat apps, private browsers, and VPNs can mitigate risks at the data and app layer. But, even if you’ve disabled all tracking on your phone, your cellular carrier still logs your location for years, and tracks far more than you realize. The government can, without a court order, access these telco call logs to reveal where you’ve gone, who you’ve contacted, and when.
Telcos are frequently breached, with over a third of Americans affected just last year. Data from telcos is enriched with a bevy of personal information, from all of the personal details you handed over just to sign up, to all of your subsequent digital behavior while using your cell phone. Weak telco security also allows attackers to steal your phone number via SIM swap attacks, and gain access to accounts tied to your phone number like private chats, social media, and banking.
Even when they’re not losing subscriber data, traditional carriers are selling it. They can and have legally sold sensitive subscriber information, including to warrantless government surveillance programs, and failed to fulfill their duty to warn elected officials that they were subject to government surveillance requests.
Cape is different. We’ve built a secure mobile network from the ground up, with minimal data collection and hardened protections against common telecom exploits. We’re trusted by journalists and experts who deeply understand these risks, like ex-New York Times cybersecurity journalist Nicole Perlroth. We have been reviewed by Joseph Cox of 404 Media, and we collaborate with a number of organizations defending digital rights and at-risk populations, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Safe Escape.
Cape has partnered with Team CommUNITY to make our private cell phone service available to members for $20/month for 1 year (normally $99/month), with all taxes and fees included.
