Surveillance actors can track location in real time and intercept text messages and calls, without ever hacking a phone, employing spyware, or phishing for credentials. They do so invisibly, by leveraging global telecom design, according to a recent Citizen Lab report on surveillance vendors. Recent reporting by the Financial Times, drawing on investigations by Mobile Surveillance Monitor, shows that this vulnerability was used by Iran to target American service members abroad.
We sat down with Gary Miller, whose research underpins this reporting and who leads network intelligence at mobile threat hunting company iVerify.
